- Ph.D., Indiana University, 1992
- Research Interests: studies population issues such as the consequences of varying family size and parental structure for children's well-being. In addition, Prof. Downey has been studying seasonal variations in children's BMI gain (summer vs. school year). His most recent study found that, on average, first grade children gain BMI twice as fast in the summer versus school year. Prof. Downey plans to extend this work to follow children through adolescence.
- Current Research: stratification processes in schools among young children.
