New Study by Dr. Zhenchao Qian, Sociology and Colleagues Finds Decreasing Rates Of Intermarriage Among Latinos, Asians

Using recently released data from the U.S. Census Bureau's Current Population Survey for 1995-2008, Dr. Zhenchao Qian, with colleagues Dr. Dan Lichter and Dr. Julie Carmalt of Cornell University, find declining rates of marriage to whites among U.S. Latinos and Asians. They show that much of the decline is due to increasing migration of Latino's and Asians, which increases opportunities to marry co-ethnics. The reserchers suggest that this in-migration also revitalized cultural identity so that marrying within ethnic groups has become more desireable to U.S. born Latinos and Asians. Their resarch is covered in the Wall Street Journal.
