Dr. Lisa Frazier, research specialist at the College of Public Health, will provide guidance on writing for a policy audience, including briefs, op-eds, and other public-facing translation of academic research. The workshop will include time for participants to draft their own products.

This workshop will be most useful if you come with an idea of the research problem or issue that you would like to communicate about. The workshop will be structured in three modules.
1. What is policy writing and why you’re engaged in it | Overview of policy action & actors
a. What? What does “policy writing” mean?
b. Why? Public problems, public policy, public objectives
c. How? Government structure and actors
2. Determining voice, audience, and purpose | Structuring your argument as an ask
a. Defining and framing the problem
b. Identifying stakeholders and target audience
c. Making a specific request (instead of recommendation)
3. Making the most of data and narrative | Structuring your evidence
a. Problem for whom?
b. Reasons for intervention – gains for whom?
c. Practical considerations – types of evidence
d. Ethical considerations
