Drawing on the methods used for her IPR Seed Grant research, IPR affiliate Parvati Singh recently published an article in Epidemiology. Dr. Singh, assistant professor in the College of Public Health, coauthored "State-level Payday Loan Bans and Preterm Births in the US, 2000–2019." The research behind the article examines how the predatory nature of payday loans may portend increased financial strain and adverse public health consequences.

Dr. Singh received her IPR Seed Grant in 2021-22. The work involved with this grant contributed to her current research. In addition, the idea for the payday loan paper came from an episode of Last Week Tonight with John Oliver about a decade ago. The episode focused on how payday loans put a staggering amount of Americans in debt and prey on the elderly and military service members.
