Title: Does Offspring Education Influence Older Parents' Cognitive Health?

Abstract: The social determinants of health framework suggests that resources such as educational attainment influence cognitive health at the individual level. Research that expands this framework also considers the influence of family members on individual-level health outcomes. Although most of this scholarship has examined how the resources of older generations (e.g., parents, grandparents) influence the health of younger generations within the family, a growing body of scholarship asks how the resources of adult children can also shape the health of older parents. This presentation shares new findings from recent work that examines the association between adult children’s education and old parents’ cognitive health in the U.S. context and provides an overview of knowledge gaps that remain.

This seminar is co-sponsored by the Center for Aging Families.
