Theme: Immigration and Migration
Title of Talk: Dissatisfaction and Migration: Migration Beyond Economic Reasons
Abstract: Migration flows driven by non-economic factors have grown considerably in recent decades. To understand this emerging trend in migration, there has been a calling for migration studies to go beyond the study of migration flows in a stable economic and social environment. In this study, we employ new data in Hong Kong, collected in 2021, to understand how non-economic factors are related to migration intentions among local residents. Hong Kong has experienced large-scale social unrest. We document how this experience is related to the intentions of local residents to emigrate. Our analysis shows that there are five dimensions of dissatisfaction with the society that are strongly related to the residents' migration intentions. We also find that the level of participation in the social movement is directly related to the current level of dissatisfaction and their intention to emigrate. We discuss the implications of the findings to the study of migration.
