Healthy unions provide a powerful social resource that has benefits for health and well-being. Due to changing cultural, political, and social landscapes in the U.S., the salience of identity in unions and its implications have become heightened. Whether couples have the same or different social identities, the importance and expression of their identities can be a positive resource for couples or a source of additional stress that can affect relationship quality. Using the National Couples Health and Time Use Survey (N = 1515 couples), I investigate how couples’ dissimilarity in identity characteristics and stressors are related to their relationship satisfaction across same- and different-gender relationships at the intersection of partners’ race and ethnicity. Results suggested that greater couple-level dissimilarity in identity characteristics and stressors were associated with lower relationship satisfaction. However, which identity characteristics and stressors were related to relationship quality differed across relationship configurations. Implications for understanding diverse groups of couples will be discussed.   The City of Columbus and Franklin County are currently recommending masking indoors after the CDC upgraded the county to a “high” COVID-19 community level. IPR strongly encourages masks at all events.
