Migration, Urbanization and Migrants' Social Integration in China

Yuan Ren is visiting Brown and the PSTC as a Fulbright Scholar. He is a professor in the School of Social Development and Public Policy, Fudan University, China, the deputy director of Institute of Population Research (IPR), and a Fellow of New Century Excellent Talents awarded by Chinese National Education Commission.

Ren received his Ph.D. in Economics from Fudan University in 1999. He has been awarded a fellowship at University of Aberdeen by British Council (2000), a postdoctoral research associate position at the University of Illinois at Chicago (2002), and was a visiting researcher in the International Center for the Study of East Asian Development in Japan (2006).

Ren is a member of the Chinese Population Association, council member of Shanghai Population Association (SPA), board member of Urban and Regional Sociology Research Committee of the International Sociology Association (2014-2018), steering committee member of Urban China Research Network, and board member of Urban Governance for Sustainable Cities Network.

Ren’s recent research includes migrants’ social integration, Chinese urbanization, Yangtze River Delta urban agglomeration, Chinese population changes and policies, aging, population and society, informal employment, Shanghai global city, urban studies in the global south, low carbon society, urban sustainability governance, with a primary focus on China.
