These trends are disturbing in light of the widely held belief that researchers are most innovative at young ages. The fact that the US is increasingly turning to innovation as an economic driver heightens concerns about the aging of the scientific workforce. Moreover, the demands on biomedical research will increase as the US and world populations age. We discuss trends in the age-structure of the US scientific workforce, the relationship between age and scientific creativity and projects to assess the likely health and economic impacts of the aging workforce as well as policy responses.   038 Townshend Hall Institute for Population Research popcenter@osu.edu America/New_York public
