Dr. Joyce Chen, OSU FAES: Temporary Versus Permanent Migration and the Implications for Origin Households
This talk presents preliminary evidence from a new dataset collected in rural Bangladesh. I describe the characteristics of permanent and temporary migrants: the purported reasons for migration, migration histories, outcomes at the destination (e.g., employment, wages), and interactions with their origin households. Additionally, I examine cross-reports from the migrant and the origin household regarding earnings and remittances to assess whether and to what extent information asymmetries may be present.
