The 19th Annual OSU-BGSU Graduate Student Conference on Population will be held in-person on Friday, November 21, 2025, and hosted by Ohio State University’s Institute for Population Research (IPR) in conjunction with the Bowling Green State University’s Center for Family and Demographic Research (CFDR). (Faculty, please share this information with your graduate students.)

Who Should Submit Papers and Attend

We welcome and encourage paper submissions on population-related topics from graduate students in all departments and disciplines. All are welcome to attend, even if you do not have a paper to submit currently. This conference is a wonderful opportunity to engage in academic discussions with students and faculty in a low-stakes setting. BGSU/CFDR will be organizing a bus to and from Ohio State.

If you have a thesis or a paper in progress, please consider submitting it! The conference is open to both early-stage work and more developed projects, and is an excellent opportunity to develop your work by exchanging ideas and perspectives with both BGSU and OSU students and faculty.

Session Presentation Options: Oral or Roundtable

Prospective participants will have a chance to submit their research for presentation at either an oral session or a roundtable.

Oral Session

Students who would like to submit for an oral session should submit either:

  • An extended abstract (3-4 pages that include an abstract, literature review, methods, and at least preliminary findings) or
  • A full paper

Roundtable Session

Roundtables will consist of short, informal oral presentations, providing a one-page handout to the audience at a table, followed by a Q&A and group discussion. These sessions are particularly beneficial for smaller projects or projects at early stages of development. Each roundtable will have a graduate student as a chair.

Students who would like to participate in a roundtable should submit:

  • An extended abstract (3-4 pages that include an abstract, literature review, and methods section). We recommend that students who have working papers with preliminary findings submit for an oral session.

Session Chair Volunteers

We are also looking for session chairs. Session chairs will be assigned to each session based on their similar research expertise. They will run their sessions by:

  • Keeping time
  • Introducing each scholar
  • Facilitating discussion

If you would like to be a session chair, fill out the registration survey linked below.

Registration and Submission Details

If you are interested in attending, presenting or volunteering as a session chair at the conference, please fill out the OSU-BGSU conference registration and survey so there can be an accurate headcount.

For submissions, please email your paper/abstract to Candice Crutchfield, with the subject line “OSU-BGSU Conference Submission” and the type of submission in the body of the email (in addition to filling out the survey).

The deadline for submissions is Friday, October 24, 2025, by 11:59 p.m. EST. Participants will be notified if their paper is accepted by October 31 and what section and time they will be presenting by November 7.

If you have any questions, please contact one of this year's student organizers: Candice Crutchfield, Lee Brady, or Julie Skeldon.
