  • Ph.D. Ohio State University, 1987
  • Research Interests: Social justice in health
  • Current Research: More recently my interests have shifted to health across the life course, investigating the relationships between disadvantage and health. I am currently a Co-Principal Investigator on a National Institute of Nursing Research study entitled Poverty, low birth weight and obesity across the life course. Using the National Longitudinal Survey of Youth (NLSY) we are examining the social determinants that are related to health behaviors and disease development. We are particularly interested in examining the relationship between economic status, health behaviors and health outcomes (birth outcomes, and adult and childhood obesity) across racial and socio-economic groups. The economic measures include neighborhood and state-level factors, as well as individual income and relative deprivation, cumulated over the life course of the individual.
