Barbara Piperata, who has devoted her career to understanding nutrition in some of Brazil's most rural, poor communities, spent part of the fall in the Amazon rainforest conducting research under a Fulbright Scholar Program grant.

Kendra McSweeney, an Ohio State geography professor who helped Piperata with her research, said the work is groundbreaking.

"What’s so powerful about her study is she’s one of the only assessments of this program we know of that did a rigorous before-and-after following of people — what they were like before the program, what they were like after the program," McSweeney said.
