New Research by IPR Affiliate Claire-Kamp Dush Using NLSY

Family Stability May Be More Crucial Than Two Parents for Child Success: IPR faculty affiliate Claire Kamp Dush's latest research compares the influence of family stability on children's cognitive abilities, behavior, and emotional health. She found that family stability may be more important for child well-being than growing up in a two-parent household. The study appears as a chapter in the new book “Marriage and Family: Perspectives and Complexities” (Columbia University Press), which Kamp Dush edited with H. Elizabeth Peters, professor of policy analysis and management and director of the population program at Cornell University.
Richard Steckel Distinguished University Professor Title

Congratulations to Dr. Richard Steckel, who was awarded the Distinguished University Professor title this year. The title is awarded permanently to no more than three exceptional faculty per year and recognizes accomplishments in research, scholarly or creative work, teaching, and service. The Distinguished University Professor designation only adds to Dr. Steckel’s impressive list of recognitions at Ohio State. He also has won the University Distinguished Lecturer Award (1998), the Joan Huber Faculty Fellow Award (1999) and the Distinguished Scholar Award (2000).
Jonathan Vespa Wins Poster Award at PAA

IPR student affiliate Jonathan Vespa won an award for his poster "From Generation to Generation: The Influence of Parental Upbringing on Parenting Behaviors," presented at the 2009 Annual Meeting of the Population Association of America, held this year in Detroit. Congradulations to Jonathan.
Jonathan Vespa and Matthew Painter win Frank Mott Award

Congradulations to Jonathan Vespa and Matthew Painter, who won the Frank Mott Award for Outstanding Graduate Student Paper on Population and/or Health for their paper "Cohabitation History and Wealth Accumulation during Marriage." Their advisor Dr. Zhenchao Qian presented them with the award at the Sociology department's annual spring banquet.
IPR affiliate Kammi Schmeer Awarded National Center for Marriage Research Grant

Congratulations to IPR affiliate Kammi Schmeer for being awarded one of the National Center for Marriage Research 2009 external grants for research on Families and Financial Instability. Over 25 proposals were submitted and Kammi's project, "Early childhood material hardship and the health of children born to Hispanic mothers," was awarded the grant.

The Initiative in Population Research continues to cultivate research in population studies and health. Eighteen of our student and faculty affiliates
presented their research at the 2009 Annual Meeting of the Population Association of America. Seven of our faculty were section chairs and discussants. Ohio State University appeared an impressive 33 times in the P.A.A. program.

IPR student associates Adrianne Frech and Jamie Lynch presented their research at the 23rd Annual Hayes Forum, which recognizes outstanding graduate student research. Adrianne Frech presented her paper "Early Life Course Transitions and Healthy Behavior Trajectories
between Adolescence and Emerging Adulthood" in the Social and Behavioral Sciences Section. Jamie Lynch received 2nd place for his paper "Exposure and Vulnerability:
Child Health and Educational Attainment" in the Education and Human

Jinkook Lee Featured in On Campus Newspaper

IPR Faculty Affiliate Honored for Lifetime Achievement

Larry Brown, Distinguished University Professor and former chair of the Department of Geography at Ohio State, is the recipient of the Association of American Geographers Lifetime Achievement Honors Award, in recognition of his extraordinary vision and leadership in the field of geography. Brown’s career includes innovative research, superb mentoring of students and colleagues, and distinguished service at Ohio State and to the AAG. His work has played a significant role in the development of contemporary geographic thought in the areas of population movement, race/ethnicity in U.S. metropolitan areas, innovation diffusion, and Latin American and Third World development.

IPR Hires New Grant Coordinator: Jeanne Huba

The IPR is happy to welcome Jeanne Huba to the staff. Jeanne serves as the Grants Coordinator for the College of Social and Behavioral Sciences, and is available to assist all IPR affiliates with the grant process. Jeanne is a lifelong Buckeye, holding an MS in Preventive Medicine (Epidemiology) from OSU. She also met her husband at OSU, gave birth to two children at OSU hospital, and has worked at OSU for over 20 years.
Jeanne can assist affiliates with grant preparation and administration in a number of ways. She can complete Human Subjects (IRB) forms, write faculty biosketches, prepare data and graphic tables, provide feedback on proposals, presentations, and journal articles, and perform many other tasks in a timely manner. In addition, her experience as a Research Methods instructor provides her with the expertise to answer questions about research protocols.

First Annual Joan Huber Lecture in Population Studies

The first annual Joan Huber Lecture in Population took place on Friday, October 26, 2007, at The Ohio State University. The guest speaker, Dr. Judith A. Seltzer, (Professor of Sociology at UCLA) presented a lecture titled "Providing for Older Mothers: Is It a Family Affair?" The inaugural event for the IPR was a big success, as many faculty and student affiliates were in attendance as well as a guest appearance by E. Gordon Gee, who introduced Joan Huber. Cooksey and Mott Awarded NICHD Grant

IPR Faculty Affiliates Elizabeth Cooksey and Frank Mott were recently awarded $4,727,500 from NICHD for the project "Data Collection for Older NLSY Children." This grant continues until December 2011. Be sure to congratulate them on their hard work!
