About IPR

Overview

The Initiative in Population Research (IPR) was established in 2000 with the goal of building a multidisciplinary demographic and family research "center of excellence" at The Ohio State University. Our planning activities have a singular long-term aim: To cultivate an active and innovative research and training program centered on population studies and health, including a focus on children, youth, and families.

IPR has actively sought to merge the research activities of the Department of Sociology with the on-going research traditions and activities of the Center for Human Resource Research (CHRR). IPR has moved forward in significant ways, with new financial commitments from core departments, the College of Social and Behavioral Sciences (e.g., the Academic Enrichment Award), the Center for biostatistics, and the University. In 2004, IPR recieved an R21 grant from the Eunice Kennedy Shriver National Institute of Child Health & Human Development to support the inital development of a population research center. In 2006, IPR received additional funding from the Office of the Provost at Ohio State University as part of the Targeted Investments in Excellence (TIE).

Our focus on population and health issues builds on IPR/CHRR's current research and training strengths, and is designed to create new and broad-based synergies that cultivate new and innovative demographic research and training at The Ohio State University. Today, IPR serves more than 50 faculty research associates with broad interests and involvement across many academic departments, centers, and colleges such as the Departments of Sociology, Economics, Geography, Human Ecology, Anthropology, Social Work, Rural Sociology, Public Health, Nursing, Center for Urban and Regional Analysis and the Center for Biostatistics.
